Whale bilge pump service

September 23, 2011

We recently noticed water droplets inside the cockpit locker that we keep our Macwester Malin’s fenders. On closer inspection we noticed that our Whale Gusher Urchin bilge pump was leaking as a result of the diaphram perishing.

There are two options when it comes to replacement parts; neoprene and nitrile. We opted for the nitrile, as that was the spec that was already fitted (Whale service pack AK9011).

The servicing instructions could have been more detailed, and that would have helped reduce the amount of time that I spent inside the locker. Still, that’s another maintenance job off the list, and according to the manufacturer, the diaphram should be good for another three years before they suggest replacement.
